Waimea
North Shore
Waimea is a huge beach on the North Shore, but parking is very limited. Get there early or park at the Waimea Vally Botanical Gardens and walk over. While the bay is famous for its massive winter waves and hosting the Eddie surf competition, the summer is typically calm, with minimal shore break. Don’t forget your slippers; the walk back can be a journey. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and always check in with the lifeguard tower. There is barely shade.
For the brave-hearted, there is a large rock you can jump from into the water, but before you leap, watch others to see how they time their jump with the waves- remember: when in doubt, don’t go out (or in this case, jump).
Lifeguards on Duty: Yes, lifeguards are present year-round.
Hazards: Strong rip currents and dangerous waves in the winter. In summer, exercise caution near the rock for cliff jumping and be mindful of deeper waters.
Amenities: Restrooms, showers, and a parking lot are available, though parking fills up quickly—arrive early!
Nearby Eats: Head into Haleiwa Town for delicious local food, from garlic shrimp at food trucks to refreshing shaved ice.
